On Friday, to start off my spring break, I went over to my friend Melanie's house with my other best friends. We had a lot of fun and that was my highlight of break. The day after, I got sick however and had a really bad sinus infection which wasn't fun at all. It made me feel overall really bad and that's how I felt for the rest of break. On Wednesday I went with my Dad to the airport to pick up my Nana who was visiting from Tennessee. We went out to eat to celebrate my Dad's birthday (a few weeks late), went shopping, and made ginger ale. It was really nice to see my Nana because I don't get to see her that often as she lives so far away. On Sunday, I had Bell Choir practice and Church in the morning and then went to Youth Group in the evening. My Spring Break wasn't all that busy, but at least I had time to rest and relax.

1. Compare and Contrast Night and the Boy in the Striped Pajamas
Similarities- -both about young boys during the Holocaust -take place in concentration camps -Elie and Schmuel lost loved ones in the camp Differences (N= Night B= Boy in Striped Pjs) B-main character is a soldier's son N-Many different camps/settings B-Schmuel doesn't understand what happens in the camps all that well N-Elie survives, Schmuel doesn't 2. Analyze a character from either option Elsa from the Boy in the Striped Pajamas- Elsa is Bruno's mother. At the beginning of the movie, Elsa is very proud of her husband's promotion. Due to a slip up by one of Ralf's soldiers, Elsa learns that they are burning people in the chimneys and her husband's work isn't as noble as she thought. Elsa is furious and wants to shield her children from the horror and move them away from the camp. Elsa loves her children a lot and I think that she is the character that changes the most during the movie. 3. How have your thoughts or understandings about the Holocaust changed since completing this unit? At the beginning I didn't really know very much about the Holocaust. Through this unit, I learned a lot. I now understand what a great tragedy in world history it was and how many people were affected. 4. Which did you like better? I liked the Boy in the Striped Pajamas better than Night. It was less confusing and I liked to see the two different worlds of inside the camp and outside at the same time. 5. Any final thoughts/questions? The only question that I have is something I've wondered since I saw The Boy in the Striped Pajamas a few years ago. Were children supposed to be included in the batch of people to be gassed or was it an accident that Bruno and Schmuel were there? Name- Tough Questions
Page #- 82 Description- Two days after Eliezer's foot operation, Elie learns Buna was going to be evacuated and the sick were going to be left in the camp. Elie runs to his father and asks him "Well, Father, what do we do?". His father was silent until Elie suggested that they be evacuated with the others. He asks if Elie will be able to walk and wonders if they will regret going with everyone instead of staying. Anchor Question:What does this make me wonder about?- This makes me wonder what could have happened if they had stayed in the camp. Name- Again and Again Page #- 89 Description- When Elie and his father are marching in the snow, the both become very tired. After they are ordered to stop, they take refuge in a shed. Elie and his father keep telling the other not to sleep because if they sleep, they will die. Anchor Question:Why might the author bring this up again and again?- I think that the author brings it up to show what a different outcome of Elie's life could have been. Many people died in the snow and the author brings this up to show how close Elie and his father were to having the same fat,. Name- Words of the Wiser Page #- 78 Description- After Elie's operation he talks with an older patient. The patient warns him to leave before the next selection because "Germany has no need for sick Jews". This helps Elie to make the decision to leave even though we later find out that the patients were liberated 3 days after the camp was evacuated. Anchor Question: What's the life lesson and how does it affect the character?- The advice assists Elie to decide to leave the camp with the others. The life lesson is to not always listen to someone that you don't know because they might have a different motive than to help you. If I were POTUS my top three priorities would be...
Allow more refugees into our country- America has enough money and space to help refugees start a new life. Many people in other parts of the world are suffering from the effects of war or environmental issues. These people could have a better life if they were allowed into the United States. However, people need to be more accepting of refugees and sympathize with their situation for this to work. Create more jobs- Lots of people are unemployed, many with families who they need to support. They need a job so that way they can prosper and have a steady source of income. There are currently 92 million Americans who are without a job and a lot are homeless or very poor. Improve healthcare for everyone- Everyone is entitled to quality healthcare, but some people live without the care that they need. I would figure out a way to lower the cost, or even make it free for everyone without significantly lowering the care provider's pay. The biggest part of my winter break was going to visit my family in Knoxville, Tenneessee. It was a long 13 hour drive ( like always ) but it was worth it because I got to see my 8 year old cousin Bryce who I don't get to see that often. My Nana always hosts a big christmas party with all of our extended realatives and it was a lot of fun to see some people who hadn't come in a few years. I played a lot of board games with my Aunt and Uncle (and won most of the time) and helped my Nana cook. The weather was very nice so I could go outside in short-sleeves and still be comfortable.
Before going to Tennessee I hung out with my friends, learned 3 new songs on piano, and somehow magaged to clean my room and closet so that my best friend could take care of my lizard Merlen while I was gone. I spent a lot of time with my little sister Nora Kate playing duets, and survived being in the car with her both ways going to TN (still not sure how I made it, she's very loud). I got a lot of cool things for Christmas and overall had a really fun break. Summarize the article- The article lists 8 skills that they believe all 18-year-olds should have. These skills range from learning how to take risks to being able to talk to stangers.
Where I am with these skills- I'll admit, I hate talking to strangers, but I know how to do it if I need to. I know how to read maps and navagate (obviously not on a campus yet though). I keep track of my assignments and write down due dates. I do chores around the house and cook dinner at least once a week. I know how to handle my own problems and don't rely on others to help me solve them. I keep track of the money I earn from babysitting and dogsitting for my neighbors. I take some risks, but not very many big ones. Are the expectantions realistic, or asking too much?- Yes, these expectations are very realistic and are mostly easy to learn My sister, Nora Kate- Without her, I would be very lonely at home. She always knows how to make me laugh and I love spending time with her.
My friends- They bring so much joy into my life, and hanging out with them is one of my favorite things to do. Some I have known almost my entire life, and others for only a few years. My parents- My parents have taught me so much and continue to give me great advice about life. My pets, (current and past) Merlen, Fredo, and Luigi - I got Fredo when he was a kitten, and I was five. I spent most of my life growing up with Fredo and his brother Luigi until Luigi passed away this spring. I'm so greatful for the time I spent with him and the happiness he brought into my life, that Fredo continues to bring. Merlen, a lepord gecko, was my birthday present when I turned eight and she is very special to me. Music- I have played piano for 6 years and the oboe for 3. Playing my instruments is an escape and I love the challenge it brings. Horses- I have loved horses ever since I was little, and horseback riding always makes me feel better. I enjoy spending time with all the horses I've ridden especially my favorite, Cayenne. Where to even begin? This election was a huge disappointment to me. I feel disgusted with America, and it deeply saddens me to see pictures of Donald Trump appear when I type in "President of the United States". I am also confused, in every projection I saw about the election, they showed Hillary Clinton winning. How could have this happened? After all the rude, racist, and horrible things Trump has said, what made people vote for him? Hillary was the far more qualified candidate and deserved to win. Trump thrives on the fear of Americans, he knows where we feel vulnerable and gives false promises about "protecting" our country, he's a business man, not a leader. Trump discriminates against almost everyone except for straight white men. How could a woman vote for trump? Does she not hear all of the sexist things that comes out of his mouth? In conclusion, I am really disappointed by the lack of thinking voters put into their selection for this election.
This past summer was one of my favorites. I made a lot of great memories and had an overall fun experience. I started off my summer with a trip to Washington DC and The Historic Triangle ( Colonial Williamsburg ,Jamestown, and Yorktown ). After I returned, My Aunt, Uncle and two of my cousins came to visit from Memphis. I got to meet my baby cousin Ryan for the first time and see his two year old sister Clara. Next, I headed to my favorite place, Camp Wesley Woods in Indianola, for a week at a horse camp. Two days after I got back from camp, I took a trip to Chicago with my best friend Francesca, to see an Adele concert. We both have loved Adele's music since we were in 3rd grade, and it was a really cool concert! Next my Aunt and 8 year old cousin (on the other side) came to visit from Tennessee for a week. On August 5th I had my birthday, and a week later, my birthday party. I also dogsat for my neighbors and babysat a lot. Although it sounds like my summer was very busy, I still had plenty of time just to relax.
